Lester Holt Welcomes First Grandchild Henry in Heartfelt Family Moment — Then Heads Straight Back to the Frontlines
Just minutes after wrapping up Tuesday night’s broadcast of NBC Nightly News, anchor Lester Holt got the kind of breaking news that no newsroom could top: He had officially become a grandfather.
Holt’s eldest son, Stefon, and his wife Morgan welcomed a baby boy named Henry — the couple’s first child — in New York City that evening. Holt, 55, took to social media shortly afterward to share the joyful news, posting a heartwarming photo of himself and wife Carol cradling the newborn at the hospital.
“The big story happened just after NBC Nightly News last night,” Holt wrote. “Meeting our new grandson Henry. Welcome, little man!”
Family Joy Amid National Crisis
The celebration was brief but profound. Shortly after holding baby Henry for the first time, Holt had to rush to Florida to cover Hurricane Irma — just days after returning from Hurricane Harvey coverage in Texas.
Even from 35,000 feet in the air en route to Florida, Holt stayed connected with viewers. He tweeted a photo from the plane with the caption:
“35,000 ft over Florida coast wondering what Sunday will bring. NBC Nightly News live from Miami tonight with full coverage of Hurricane Irma.”
Stefon and Morgan Share Their Moment
The new parents also shared their own announcement on Instagram:
“Say hello to the newest member of our family. Henry Holt, born last night in NYC. Baby and Mom are doing great!”
Stefon and Morgan had previously revealed they were expecting a boy during a March gender reveal party. Married for five years, the couple met while attending Pepperdine University in Malibu and now work in New York. Stefon anchors the 11 p.m. news on WNBC, NBC’s local affiliate — just a few floors away from where his father broadcasts the national evening news at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
A Close-Knit Family
The Holts are a tight-knit family. Carol, Lester’s wife, beamed with pride as she posed with her husband and grandson in the hospital photo. Their younger son, Cameron, is a financial analyst at Morgan Stanley.
Despite a demanding career that takes him across the country and into disaster zones, Holt has always made time for his family — and the joy of meeting his grandson was a powerful, emotional moment for the longtime anchor.
Still, as ever, duty called.
