Florida A&M Athletic Director Angela Suggs Turns Herself In Over Alleged $24K Theft From Former Job

FAMU Welcomes Angela Suggs as New Vice President & Director of Athletics - HBCU Buzz

Florida A&M University’s athletic director, Angela Suggs, is facing serious legal trouble after turning herself in to authorities on Monday amid allegations she stole over $24,000 from her previous employer.

Suggs, 55, surrendered at the Leon County Jail and was subsequently released on bond. She has been charged with felony grand theft, felony scheme to defraud, and four misdemeanor counts of submitting false claims on travel vouchers during her time as CEO of the Florida Sports Foundation.

According to investigators, Suggs allegedly used a corporate credit card to make personal purchases, including wire transfers, cash withdrawals, and expenses at casinos during official business trips. The allegations span several incidents over her seven-year tenure at the Foundation.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement began investigating Suggs last fall after a criminal referral was submitted by the Inspector General of the Florida Department of Commerce. A forensic audit revealed multiple instances where Suggs allegedly misrepresented expenses as business-related or failed to reimburse the Foundation for personal charges.

“Florida A&M University is aware of the allegations involving our athletics director, Angela Suggs, while she was working with a former employer,” said interim university president Timothy Beard in a statement. “While the matter is unrelated to her current role at FAMU, we are monitoring the situation closely and will respond as appropriate.”

Suggs, a Florida A&M alumna, was hired as athletic director in 2024—around the same time the criminal probe was launched. Before that, she served as the head of the Florida Sports Foundation, the state’s official sports promotion and development organization.

As the case unfolds, FAMU officials and students await further updates on whether Suggs will remain in her position while the legal process plays out.
