Brittney Griner joined the Atlanta Dream this offseason after spending 12 years and 11 seasons with the Phoenix Mercury. The 6’9″ All-Star center is returning from injury and appears to be in good shape. She suited up in Atlanta’s fourth game of the 2025 WNBA season against the Dallas Wings.

Griner didn’t seem pleased with the referee’s decisions during the game and confronted an official in the middle of a sideline interview.

Brittney Griner Confronts Referee During Atlanta Dream vs. Dallas Wings Game

Griner’s Dream went head-to-head with the Wings on Saturday, May 24. The first quarter saw Dallas take a one-point lead. However, Atlanta came back to finish the first half seven points ahead. The Dream won the third quarter 31–20 and held a comfortable 17-point lead.

The Wings took the final quarter 25–15, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap. The six-time All-WNBA center recorded 15 points, one assist, and eight rebounds in Atlanta’s 83–75 win over Dallas.

While giving a sideline interview during halftime, Griner spotted an official. She abruptly left the reporter mid-interview to confront the referee. The Dream star was visibly upset about a call made earlier in the game. She exchanged words with the official about holding before yelling an expletive.

“Be f****** Better!” Griner yelled at the referee.

Griner’s explicit remark and behavior toward the official will likely result in a fine. However, she swiftly apologized to the broadcast for abandoning the sideline interview and her outburst.

She is one of the most decorated players in WNBA history. The former first-round pick led the Mercury to a WNBA championship in 2014, averaging 15.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks per game, while shooting 57.8% from the field that season.

Griner has won the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year award twice, made the All-Defensive team seven times, and earned 10 WNBA All-Star selections. She is averaging 14.8 points, 1.0 assists, and 7.8 rebounds through four games this season.

Atlanta had a rocky start to the season, losing 94-90 to the Washington Mystics in the opener. They bounced back with a 91-90 win over Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever in their second matchup.

However, the Dream lost to the Fever in their rematch at State Farm Arena on Thursday, May 22. With the win over Dallas on May 24, Griner’s squad now holds a 2–2 record this season. They face the Connecticut Sun on Sunday, May 25.
