Six months after the world was shaken by the heartbreaking death of One Direction star Liam Payne, his sister Ruth Gibbins has opened up in an emotional tribute that has left fans around the globe in tears.
In a deeply personal Instagram post shared on April 16, Ruth, 34, expressed the unimaginable grief she’s been carrying since Liam passed away at the age of 31, following a fatal fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

“My head is still screaming for you,” Ruth began. “Each morning on waking, I feel like I am plunged underwater, gasping for air that never comes to relieve me. Living without you is impossible, so for now, I exist.”
🌧️ “I Miss You Loudly, Quietly, and in All the Moments in Between”
In the powerful letter, Ruth revealed how she is struggling to find a sense of normalcy while silently grieving every day.
“I’m learning to laugh or smile in the right places, but mate, it’s exhausting when all I want to do is speak to you,” she wrote.
“In the few moments I allow myself to feel love and not just loss, I can really smile at the memories of us… But memories are always tinged with sadness at how unfair it is we can’t make new ones.”
👻 “I Can Sometimes Hear You Laughing at Me”
In a moment of raw honesty, Ruth shared how she feels Liam’s presence in everyday life—even in the silence.
“I can sometimes hear you laughing at me walking around like Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost, looking for you everywhere I go. But I see you—you’re always coming through in different ways to put me back on the right path.”
“I can’t process what’s happened and the finality of it. You know I will never stop doing all I can for you. I miss you loudly, quietly, and in all the moments in between.”
She ended her post with a message that pierced the hearts of fans:
“Love you so much more than these words or my tears are capable of expressing, but I know you know this. For now, I’ll meet you in my dreams.”
🕯️ What Happened to Liam Payne?
Liam tragically passed away in October 2024 after falling from the CasaSur Palermo Hotel balcony in Argentina. An initial autopsy revealed he suffered multiple traumatic injuries and both internal and external hemorrhages.
A toxicology report later showed the presence of alcohol, cocaine, and prescription antidepressants in his system.
In December 2024, an inquest in the UK confirmed his official cause of death as “polytrauma”, according to Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court.
Though his light was dimmed far too soon, Liam Payne’s voice and spirit continue to live on through the music, the memories, and the loved ones who will never stop honoring him — especially his sister, Ruth.
🕊️ Rest in peace, Liam. You are missed—loudly, quietly, and in all the moments in between.
