The Indiana Fever’s Saturday, May 24, matchup against the New York Liberty was supposed to be just another early-season thriller. Instead, it turned into a firestorm, thanks to some highly questionable calls in crunch time. The Liberty may have walked away with the win, but not everyone is buying how it happened.

Even Fever head coach Stephanie White didn’t hold back when the final buzzer sounded. And based on what she said afterward, this wasn’t just about one game. It’s starting to feel personal.

Coach Stephanie White Speaks Out After Controversial Officiating

The Saturday night battle between the Liberty and Indiana Fever went down to the wire, ending in a nail-biting 90-88 victory for New York. But for the Fever, it wasn’t just about the loss; it was how they lost.

The final possession saw Fever’s superstar Caitlin Clark trying to take control, only to get stripped by Natasha Cloud. But before that, it looked like Clark was fouled. She seemed sure of it. She immediately turned to the refs, arms raised in disbelief. Her teammate Sophie Cunningham joined her, protesting the silence from the officials.

Clark wasn’t the only one frustrated. Stephanie White, the Fever’s head coach, didn’t mince words in her postgame comments.

“I thought [Caitlin] got fouled. I think it’s pretty egregious, what’s happening to us the last two games,” White said, visibly upset with the officiating.

She didn’t stop there. White went on to question whether her team is being treated fairly at all.

“The disrespect for our team, right now, has been pretty unbelievable,” she added. “So it’s disappointing that it doesn’t go both ways… We’re not looking for a change, we’re looking for consistency.”

White also pointed out the WNBA’s system for submitting officiating complaints, but admitted she has little faith in the process. “I don’t know that I ever feel like the system works,” she said.

This wasn’t just about one missed call; it was the latest in a pattern of calls that seemed to go against the Fever in big moments.

Caitlin Clark Calls Loss Frustrating After Back-to-Back Heartbreakers

For Clark, Saturday’s loss hit hard. Not only was it close, but it also mirrored the team’s earlier defeat – another game that slipped through their fingers in the final possessions.

“That’s probably what’s frustrating about it. … We are two possessions from being 4-0,” Clark told reporters after the game.

She didn’t just blame the officiating, though. Clark took a balanced approach, pointing out that the team had plenty of areas to clean up.

“There were so many little areas of this game we could have improved,” she said. “It definitely stings, but this is what’s going to make us better at the end of the year.”

Clark finished with 18 points, 10 assists, and five rebounds. But despite her stat line and leadership, the Fever are now 2-2, both losses decided by razor-thin margins.

Saturday’s game wasn’t short on drama. From a no-call on DeWanna Bonner’s drive to a questionable foul on Lexie Hull that handed Sabrina Ionescu free throws, it felt like every critical moment tilted toward the Liberty.

For now, the Fever will regroup. But if these late-game calls keep going the other way, don’t be surprised if the frustration only grows louder from the locker room to the fans.
