Caitlin Clark promised her teammate, Aliyah Boston, that she would assist with paying a fine following a technical foul during a fiery encounter between the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky on Saturday.

The WNBA showdown at Gainbridge Fieldhouse saw Clark reignite her rivalry with Angel Reese. It was Clark and her team who had the last laugh this time, as the Fever triumphed 93-58 over their Sky rivals in front of a home audience.

As expected, there were a few confrontations between Clark and Reese, particularly when the former fouled the latter while chasing a rebound.

Both Clark and her teammate, Boston, faced penalties for the clash. Boston was flagged for a technical foul when she was accused of a “physical taunt.”

An official commented on the incident, stating: “The foul on Clark met the criteria for Flagrant Foul 1, for wind up, impact, and follow through for the extension of the left hand to Reese’s back.

“Which is deemed not a legitimate basketball play, and therefore deemed unnecessary contact. After the foul, there is a physical taunt technical on Boston and a verbal technical on Reese, which offset.”

During post-game media duties, Boston were unaware that she had been penalised.

After being informed by a reporter about the technical foul decision, Boston was taken aback: “Wait, what. I got the tech? Oh no!” Clark commented on their on-court altercation saying: “Let’s not make it anything that it is not. It was just a good play on the basketball. I’m not sure what the ref saw to upgrade it, and that’s up to their discretion.

“It’s a take foul to put them at the free-throw line. I’ve watched a lot of basketball in my life, that’s exactly what it was. I wasn’t trying to do anything malicious. That’s not the type of player I am… I went for the ball, clear as day in the replay.

“You watch it, you know it shouldn’t have been upgraded. Again, that’s up to the refs’ discretion, but I appreciate AB having my back.”

In light of the penalty, Boston wryly suggested that Clark share the burden of the fine, to which she jestingly replied: “Don’t worry, I’ve got you,” followed by shared laughter between the two.

The tussle on the court was not a first-time occurrence for Clark and Reese, whose competitive history traces back to their collegiate days, continuing into their professional careers within the WNBA. Reese, when questioned about the Saturday game incident, downplayed it, tersely labelling it simply: “A basketball play.”

Subsequently, after another question was asked during the press conference, a Sky official stepped in, reminding the press that Reese had adequately addressed the query.
