Caitlin Clark’s absence is not just a setback for the Indiana Fever on the court; it has a significant impact on the entire WNBA. According to Nielsen data reported by USA Today, since she met with injury and remained sidelined due to her left quad strain, national TV ratings for WNBA games dropped sharply.
The numbers say it all. National WNBA broadcasts have seen a 55% drop in viewership since Clark’s injury, and games featuring the Fever have seen a 53% drop. Before the injury, those games averaged about 1.8 million viewers, but now that number has dropped to around 850,000. This is the first real test of how much the league’s popularity depends on Clark, and the results are visible.
WNBA viewership revolves around Caitlin Clark 🤔
And that’s more evident now than ever, with her left quad injury keeping her sidelined the past couple of weeks.

Clark played four games this season but made a significant impact right away. In her debut, she averaged 19 points, 9.3 assists, and six rebounds and had a triple-double. Her presence drew huge crowds and strong TV ratings. Now that she’s missed six games, those numbers have dropped noticeably. However, she’s back in limited practice, but there’s still no clear date for her comeback.
WNBA Ratings Are Dependent On Caitlin Clark’s Presence

Other factors could also have affected the dip in ratings. The NBA finals, Stanley Cup finals, and French Open have all drawn viewers away from regular WNBA programming. Additionally, fellow high-profile rookie Paige Bueckers of the Dallas Wings also missed games due to injury, which may have contributed to the league’s rating slide.
Still, it’s hard to overlook the timing. Clark became the face of the WNBA’s surge in popularity. Without her, fans would not find the games interesting. While the league is growing overall, her presence gave it a significant boost, and her absence shows just how much of a cornerstone she is.
