Kanye West Causes Controversy with Song Lyrics Inspired by Traumatic Childhood Experiences
Last Monday (21), rapper Kanye West, now known as Ye, once again caused controversy on social media by sharing excerpts from his new song entitled “Cousins”. The track raises sensitive issues related to traumatic and personal experiences lived during his childhood.
In a post made on the X platform (formerly Twitter), the artist revealed that the inspiration for the new song came from sensitive episodes involving one of his cousins, currently in prison, according to him, for a serious crime that occurred years after they both shared important moments in their childhood.
“This song is called COUSINS and it’s about my cousin who is in prison for life for taking the life of a pregnant woman, years after I said we could no longer do inappropriate things together,” wrote Ye.
The artist went on to explain that, as a child, he had access to inappropriate material found at home and that this content had a profound impact on his understanding of sexuality during his early years.
“Perhaps, in my confusion and childish self-centeredness, I took the blame for exposing my cousin to this material when he was still very young,” Ye wrote. According to him, the episode occurred after finding magazines intended for adult audiences in his mother’s closet.
The rapper also stated that these events culminated in inappropriate behavior that marked his childhood in a traumatic way. In one of the most shocking parts of the post, Ye shared a highly personal phrase, referring to experiences that, according to him, occurred until his adolescence. The content provoked immediate reactions on social media, dividing the public between those who saw it as a call for help and those who criticized the explicit and disturbing content of the confession.
In the lyrics of the song, Ye details these experiences in an artistic way, bringing up themes such as guilt, emotional repression and the psychological impact of untreated trauma. The artist also mentions having asked his cousin to keep quiet about the events.
Although many fans sympathized with the possible suffering portrayed in the song, others expressed concern for the rapper’s mental well-being and questioned the public exposure of such intimate topics.
Ye’s team has not yet officially commented on the statements. The song Cousins has not yet been officially released on streaming platforms, but the excerpt released has already generated widespread debate on social media and among mental health experts.
