Faro, the Dog of the Station
The bus station was almost empty. Outside, the rain fell heavily, forming puddles that reflected the yellowish lights of the streetlamps. The atmosphere was melancholic, and the sound of water hitting the pavement created a sense of solitude. On one of the benches, curled up against the wall, a medium-sized dog trembled, soaked from head to toe.
He wasn’t wearing a collar. There was no backpack, no blanket, no trace of anyone nearby. Just him, with his eyes fixed on the station door as if waiting for someone who would never arrive.
Ernesto, the night watchman, passed by him more than once. At first, he thought the dog was lost. Then, seeing him motionless for hours, he decided to approach. He crouched down to be at eye level and spoke softly to him. “Hey, boy… where’s your people?” he asked, letting the dog sniff his hand.
The dog took a timid step forward, barely wagging the tip of his tail. He didn’t seem like a stray; his fur, though wet, was clean. Ernesto searched his pocket and pulled out half a sandwich he had saved. The dog accepted it cautiously, as if fearing it would be taken away.
For three consecutive nights, Ernesto found him in the same spot, always looking toward the door. Every time he passed by, the dog followed him with his gaze, as if every sound or movement could be the arrival of his owner. But no one came.
One morning, while the rain pounded the station, Ernesto decided he had to do something more for the dog. So he placed a cardboard box and an old towel for him to at least sleep dry. The dog settled into the box, grateful, and Ernesto felt he had done his part.
It was then that Rosa, the cleaning lady, approached him with her mop in hand. “That dog isn’t here by chance,” she said. “A man left him here last Monday. I saw him. He came in with him, waited a while, and then left on a bus. The dog… stayed here.”

Ernesto felt a knot in his stomach. The story of the abandoned dog broke his heart. “And since then…?” he asked, his voice trembling. “Since then, he waits,” Rosa replied, with a compassionate look.
The next day, Ernesto decided to take the dog to the vet. He didn’t have a chip, so they put a new one in and vaccinated him. But when he tried to take him home, the dog resisted. He pulled on the leash toward the station, as if he couldn’t leave the place where he had been left.
“You can’t stay here forever,” Ernesto told him one night, as the rain pounded against the windows. “He’s not coming back.”
It wasn’t easy. Every time he pulled him away, the dog—whom he began to call Faro—would cry silently, with a soft whimper that broke his heart. But little by little, Faro began to understand. He started running around the yard, falling asleep by the stove, and following Ernesto everywhere.
Over time, Faro became his inseparable companion. Ernesto took him to the park, where they played fetch, and included him in his daily routines. Faro learned to trust him, and his sadness began to fade.
Three months later, Ernesto had to take a bus to visit his sister. He hadn’t returned to that station since Faro came into his life. As he entered, the dog stopped. He looked toward the bench where he had spent so many nights alone, then looked at Ernesto, and instead of standing still as before, he jumped and wagged his tail, as if to say, “I’m not waiting for anyone anymore. I have you now.”
That day, Ernesto understood something important: rescuing an animal isn’t always about opening a door. Sometimes, it’s about waiting with him long enough for him to stop looking back.
The bench was still there. The rain continued to fall on the puddles. But now, the story that had begun with abandonment ended with a home. Faro had found his place, and Ernesto had found a loyal friend.
As time passed, Faro fully adapted to his new life. Every morning, he would wake Ernesto with a gentle bark, and together they enjoyed walks around the neighborhood. The bond between them grew stronger each day, and Ernesto realized that Faro had filled a void in his heart that he hadn’t even known existed.
One day, while they were walking in the park, Ernesto encountered a group of children playing with a ball. Faro, excited, ran toward them, wagging his tail enthusiastically. The children began to play with him, throwing the ball and laughing joyfully. Ernesto smiled at the sight of Faro so happy and felt a wave of gratitude for having rescued him.
“Look, Dad!” shouted one of the children. “That dog is amazing!” Ernesto approached, and the children asked if they could pet Faro. With a smile, he allowed them to come closer, and soon, Faro was surrounded by small hands that petted him and showered him with affection.
“His name is Faro,” Ernesto said, feeling proud of his companion. “He’s the best dog in the world!” exclaimed a girl as Faro happily wagged his tail.
That afternoon, as they returned home, Faro stopped at the entrance of the bus station. He looked toward the bench where he had spent so many nights alone, and Ernesto watched him with understanding. “You don’t have to stay here anymore, buddy,” he said, petting his head. “Now you have a home.”
Faro wagged his tail, as if he understood every word. They entered their home together, where warmth and love awaited them. Ernesto realized that by rescuing Faro, he had also rescued himself. He had found purpose, a faithful companion, and a reason to smile every day.
From that moment on, Ernesto and Faro’s lives intertwined beautifully. They shared laughter, adventures, and moments of tranquility. Each day was a new opportunity to create memories together, and Ernesto felt grateful for the second chance life had given him.
The rain continued to fall outside, but inside their home, there was light and love. Faro was no longer the dog waiting at the station; he was now a beloved member of the family, a beacon of hope and joy in Ernesto’s life.
And so, in a corner of the world, a dog and a man found happiness together, always remembering that sometimes, what we need most is a little patience and love to heal the wounds of the past. The story that began with abandonment ended in a home filled with love, where Faro and Ernesto would live happily ever after.
